The CX500 Turbo with which Honda stunned the motorcycle world in 1982 was one of the least likely bikes ever to be put into production. The turbocharged V-twin was large, heavy, complex and expensive. From the moment it was unveiled, many observers regarded the Turbo as more of a corporate statement than a serious superbike.

In 1983, both versions of the V-twin were bumped to 650 cc. Otherwise, the 1983 Honda CX650T motorcycle was mostly a carryover from the CX500 Turbo, although the color scheme was changed from pearlescent eggshell with red and black accents to the pearlescent white with red and blue trim as shown on our featured bike. Funny how these subjects come up! Only yesterday, I changed my CX500's fork oil from ancient (though not particularly high mileage) ATF oil, and replaced it with 15W fork oil. Surprisingly, the old ATF oil still had some of it's red colour. The bike now feels more stable in bends than previously, and doesn't dive nearly as much under braking.

The mechanical seal is around $25 from Honda plus you'll want the small o-rings and large shaped housing o-ring. While they were at it, Honda’s boffins also opted for another first off: forged pistons. Further R&D focused on improving the chassis for the massive power hike. Anti-dive forks, a wind tunnel- designed fairing, a change in wheel size and countless other upgrades lifted the quirky CX500 to the level of an almost mystical machine.
